Malaysian Nationals is one of the most prestigious debating tournaments in the whole of the Malaysian debating circuit. Every year, MalaysianNationals is hosted in two formats. The first of which is conducted in the British Parliamentary format (2 per team) and is branded as MNIDC. Our team from Malaya won the last year’s edition of MNIDC. MNUDC, on the other hand, is the Asian Parliamentary format (3 per team) of Malaysian Nationals which Universiti Malaya is also a defending champion of. MNUDC 2023 was participated by 30 teams from 20 institutions and was held at Taylor’s College Subang Jaya from the 20th to the 21st of May 2023. Our university sent a total of 3 teams and 2 adjudicators.

The teams are as follows: -

Malaya 1: Muhyuddin Ahsan, Kuhan Karttikeyn and Rashrvin Pillay

Malaya 2: Harith Danial, Imran Zamil and Benjamin Tan

Malaya 3: Thivagar, Kenneth Chin and Lim Zack Adjudicator: Miza E-Shafa and Catherine Alicia Nathan

For the third time in history, Team Malaya 1 comprised of Muhyuddin Ahsan, Kuhan Karttikeyn and Rashrvin Pillay emerged as the overall Champions of the Malaysian National University Debating Championship (MNUDC) 2023!

Team Malaya 1 broke 1st in the tournament with a perfect run in the preliminary rounds! They started off the elimination rounds with a unanimous 3-0 win against UNIMAS A in the quarter-finals. They powered through the semi-finals with a 4-1 split win against Sunway A which landed them in the Grand Finals against MARA A. Eventually, they emerged as Champions with a 6-3 victory in which Kuhan was crowned the Finals Best Speaker. Kuhan was also crowned the Overall Best Speaker award while Rashrvin and Ahsan bagged the 3rd and 5th Overall Best Speaker awards respectively.

Team Malaya 2 comprising of Harith Danial, Benjamin Tan and Imran Zamil managed to break 6th in the tournament and unanimously won against IIUM 1 in the Open Pre- Quarter Finals. Unfortunately, they bowed out of the tournament as Open Quarterfinalists against the eventual finalists, MARA A on a slim 2-1 split decision. Team Malaya 3, too managed to secure a 2nd break in the novice category and made it to the Novice Semifinals of the tournament after a 3-2 lost against UPM 1. We are also extremely happy to announce that our adjudicator, Catherine Alicia Nathan was crowned the Overall Best Judge of the tournament while Miza managed to break as an adjudicator and chair the Open Pre-Quarterfinals round! We feel very ecstatic about our achievement as a contingent and we are ready to go for a next clean sweep victory for the next edition of Malaysian Nationals.
