Kuala Lumpur, 9 January 2025 — Universiti Malaya (UM) hosted the Sound of Hope (SoHo) Charity Concert, successfully raising RM9,000 to provide food aid for underprivileged students. Attended by over 300 people, this initiative, a first among Malaysian public universities, highlighted UM’s commitment to addressing food insecurity.
The event, organized by the Department of Media Studies, received strong support from UM leadership. The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Student Affairs), Professor Dr. Zamri Bin Radzi, and the Head of the Department of Media Studies, Dr. Amira Sariyati Binti Firdaus, were present and actively supported the initiative.
Proceeds from the concert will be directed to UM’s food aid programs through the Student Affairs Department, ensuring that students in need receive essential support. UM student representatives, including KMUM President Abqari bin Annuar and Vice President Lim Jing Jet, along with faculty representatives, have pledged to promote the concert’s mission on social media. This collective effort reflects UM’s dedication to fostering a culture of care and responsibility within its student community.
The concert featured performances by local artists Putri Dahlia and Yuji, alongside UM student groups such as ST4RISE, Ranisya, and the Yao Lan Shou Song Composing Unit. Highlights included renditions of “Old Love” and audience interaction sessions, creating a lively and memorable atmosphere.
“This concert would not have been possible without the performers, leadership, and enthusiastic attendees. Together, we’ve shown how a community can come together to address critical issues like student hunger,” said Nur Iman Faqihah Saiful Rizal, the Event Director of SoHo Charity Concert, during her speech.
A Milestone for UM
The SoHo Charity Concert represents a significant step in UM’s efforts to improve student well-being. It demonstrates the strength of collaboration and sets the stage for future initiatives to support the UM community.
